History & Entertainment Meet at the Cody Stampede

Rodeo

One of the most iconic symbols of the Wild West and the Cowboy State in particular is the longstanding rodeo. Whether you’ve lived in Cody your whole life or are simply passing through town, the Cody Stampede Rodeo is a must-see.

Below, you can learn a bit more about its history and what to expect for your first time at this exciting event!

Welcome to the Rodeo Capital of the World

Since 1919, the award-winning Cody Stampede Rodeo has been an integral part of the community, culture, and tradition of the Wild West. Known as the Rodeo Capital of the World, Cody is home to the longest professional rodeos.

Additionally, it is the only place in the country that offers nightly rodeos over the summer months for the public to enjoy.

Ride the History of the Cody Rodeo

Originally started by Buffalo Bill, the rodeo was a key part of his famous Wild West Show. He dedicated each performance to educating onlookers about the rich regional history and culture of the West. Tryouts for the Wild West Show were frequently held behind the historic Irma Hotel.

In 1913, Buffalo Bill brought his beloved Wild West Show to a close. He passed away a few years later and led a final parade and rodeo show to commemorate a visit from the prince of Monaco. After Buffalo Bill’s death, Clarence Williams initiated a celebratory event in honor of Buffalo Bill Cody and his mission to preserve the history of the Old West.

Later, the tradition grew when Carly Downing, a former performer, added the Cody Nite Rodeo to the schedule. Together, these attractions continued to draw the most revered cowboys and spectators from across the country.
