Oil Change Intervals

Oil ChangeThe amount of time you can go between having your vehicle’s oil changed depends on the type of oil you’re using in the engine. Conventional oil is what you’ll find in most older vehicles. If your car runs on conventional oil, it’s recommended it be switched out every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Newer cars run on synthetic oil. This kind of oil can go significantly longer—6,000 to 7,500 miles—before a change is necessary.

Key Factors of an Oil Change

It’s important to keep in mind that the above ranges are not set in stone. They can be reduced considerably by such factors as weather conditions, the age of your vehicle, the condition of the roads you use for your commutes, and your driving behavior. It’s for this reason you should keep an eye on your car’s behavior. See below for a few tell-tale signs that your car might be due for some attention.

Oil Change Dashboard Warning Lights

Oil LightYour vehicle likely has an oil pressure, oil level, and/or oil change light on the dashboard. Be sure to see a certified mechanic right away when you notice one of these lights has turned on. The check engine light is also a good indicator there might be an issue. Again, have things checked out immediately if it’s illuminated. Doing so could help avoid further damage.

Strange Engine Noises

If you notice banging or clicking noises coming from the engine or the engine seems to be running louder than usual, it could mean the oil is too low or too thin.

The Appearance of Your Oil

It’s certainly a good idea to check the oil for yourself every once in a while. When doing this, be sure to take note of the color. Healthy oil should have the same hue as honey or amber. It should also be free of dirt. Dark brown, black, or dirty oil needs to be changed as soon as possible.
