Towing Capacity For Your Toyota Truck
There are a few towing capacity terms you might want to familiarize yourself with before setting out on a towing adventure.
- Tongue Weight: A vehicle’s tongue weight is described as the downward force applied to a hitch by the tongue of a trailer. It’s important to know since tongue weight can effect a vehicles driving performance. If the tongue weight is too high, you truck will sit low and if it’s not light it light it can lift the back of your truck. A good rule of thumb is to have a tongue weight of around 9-15% of your trailer’s gross weight.
- Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR): Is the maximum weight that can be applied to front or rear axles. Toyota truck axles have specific GAWRs specifications.
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or gross vehicle mass (GVM): Is the maximum weight of a loaded vehicle (vehicle + passengers + cargo). The GVWR is specifically provided by Toyota for their trucks.
- Gross Trailer Weight (GTW): Is the maximum weight of a loaded trailer (trailer + cargo). Using a Truck/Car scale is the easiest way to determine weight.
- Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR): This measurement is a combination of Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) + Gross Trailer Weight (GTW).

Hello. We are considering 2019, 2017 (DFI) or 2011 Highlander. (Hybrid or Non-hybrid)
We do not yet have a VIN to check details.
1) Which digits in VIN define towing?
2) What is the VIN code to define 5000lb tow?
3) Can 2011 hybrid (with tow pkg) also tow 5000lb same as non-hybrid (with tow pkg) ?
4) Does 5000lb tow package have to be ordered as an extra or does it automatically come with SE or Limited ?
(For 2011 & 2017 Highlander)
5) Please confirm tow includes; Bigger rad. Cooling fan. Stronger alternator. Transmission cooler. More ?? (Assume have to buy wire harness, receiver & hitch ?)
Thank you for your time. John. Js123Traveller@Gmail.com
I am trying to see what my 2010 Toyota tundra towing capacity is. I cant seem to get on anywhere to find out. Can you please help me out. Tundra grade 5.7 ffv double long bed 4wd. Crew cab 6 speed auto.
Doug,
The towing capacity on your Toyota Tundra will depend on your model code and if you have the towing package or not. Looks like it’ll either be 8100lbs or 10100lbs but depends on your specific truck. I’ve attached a link to the owner’s manual for you to cross-check your vehicle to be sure. Check page 271 https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM34516U/pdf/OM34516U.pdf
